    Citi Country Officer

    The position is responsible for leading and growing Citi’s Institutional Clients Group (ICG) business in Kenya covering Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB) which provides comprehensive relationship coverage, Markets and Securities Services (MSS) business, Treasury and Trade Solutions (TTS) business which provides integrated cash management and trade finance and Capital Markets Origination (CMO) business focused on the capital-raising needs of our institutional clients. Citi’s target market comprises multinational companies, large local corporations, Government and related entities, Financial Institutions (FI), and Not for Profit Business (NPI).

    The CCO is also accountable for franchise governance including all regulatory and government relationships, Compliance and AML, Human Resources, Community Affairs, Crisis Management, Business performance oversight, and chairs the various governance committees.

    The Kenyan market has significant growth opportunities and may require large scale investments to capture them. This presents a unique set of leadership challenges for the successful CCO. In addition to strong leadership and technical skills, the CCO will need to have the aspiration, capability and confidence to grow the business whilst maintaining the efficiency and returns of the business. They will need to identify growth opportunities and align both country / product management in the evaluation and potential execution of each initiative. A proactive Ambassador for Citi, they will need a diverse background of experience and proven track-record of delivering results and growth. A strong customer orientation is important in order to ensure that Citi Kenya is positioned to “be the best for the client”.

    While this is a CCO Kenya role, over time it has the potential to be expanded to East Africa Cluster/business head, depending on the potential and performance of the selected individual and/or business requirements.

    Responsibilities

    This role will be responsible for directly meeting the business revenues of US$ 89 mil and managing a direct expense base of $ 33 mil. The successful incumbent will also manage the optimal utilization of approved headcount to meet revenue goals and also for the recruitment, appraisal, training, development, motivation and goal setting of all staff and devising and effecting a succession plan. The CCO will also liaise with various regional and global product partners.

    Key responsibilities include;

    • Leading the business:
      • Collaborates with product and functional partners to design, influence and lead country business strategy – having accountability for the end result at country level
      • Communicates a clear vision of the business strategy and engages employees in support of the strategy
      • Leads the country scorecard and financial reporting
      • Generates new value propositions where appropriate
      • Strategically manages all available resources and links operations to profitability
        Employs optimization strategies where required
      • Leads acquisitions/investments/divestments as appropriate
      • Coaches the leadership team to build high performing teams
      • Influences talent, performance and mobility decisions in the best interests of the Country and Citi as a whole
      • Actively raises Citi’s profile with external stakeholders including clients, regulators, government, community, media and alumni
      • Maps and monitors the local business relative to its competitors
      • Supports government advocacy efforts aimed at enhancing the business operating environment
      • Leads country-wide products and functions
      • Chairs the Country Coordinating Committee (CCC) which includes representatives of each of the products and functions within the country
      • Chairs the Country Asset and Liability Committee (ALCO)
    • Protecting the Franchise
      • Acts as the lead contact with regulators and government officials for all products and functions
      • Ensures compliance with all laws, regulations, and corporate policies, including ethics and business practices
      • Makes strategic recommendations in order to optimize capital, leveraging an in-depth understanding of current and prospective local regulatory frameworks
      • Ensures there are procedures so that all staff within the country are able to escalate issues to the CCO, as well as to their immediate supervisors
      • Ensures that issues are escalated, as appropriate, to the Regional CEOs and the President of International Franchise Management
      • Identifies, assesses, mitigates, communicates and anticipates all types of risks (e.g. industry, portfolio, diversification, sovereign, commercial, currency, etc.)
      • Assesses overall country risk and interacts with the Country Risk Committee
      • Monitors sovereign and liquidity limits
      • Manages the organization and corporate governance of country-based legal entities and their regulatory reporting
      • Develops and implements Audit and Risk Review programs
      • Develops and implements Regulatory Exam programs
