    M-Pesa Africa – Business Development Manager- Business Payments - (22000020)

     Role Description

    You will also be supporting the OpCos to execute on commercial contracts and leverage regional alignment for multi-market frameworks. It will involve developing and maintaining business development material, refining commercial models, liaising with legal and regulatory teams, building and maintaining a business development pipeline, relationship management, inputting key partner needs to the agile development process, sharing best practice on partnership support and helping markets migrate existing relationships to the M-PESA AFRICA platform.

     Key Role Responsibilities 

    Business Payments: 

    Complexity of area/responsibilities:

    The portfolio of partners you are responsible for may include payments services providers, global merchants and large local organizations to integrate either via the M-Pesa Open API or our mini app platform.

     Additional expertise needed: Due to complex, diversified product areas, the successful candidate needs to have a good understanding of technical channels (solutions maintained include open API’s, Business App, Portal, Digital Onboarding Platform)

    *Drive partnership management to support commercial objectives and build a business development pipeline:

    • Own business development pipeline and drive business development with relevant 3rd parties, negotiate key commercial and product terms and support legal on contracting
    • Proactively build and maintain business development documentation, including key proof points 
    • Design business development strategies to fulfil target partnerships roadmap
    • Collaborate with the wider Commercial organization to design and execute marketing initiatives to generate new leads within target partners
    • Become the voice of key strategic accounts within M-Pesa, ensuring partner needs are managed

    • Act as the SPOC for a portfolio of accounts, ensuring partnership success
    • Optimize the P&L for key strategic partners, driving the commercial success of partnerships
    • Identify and implement initiatives to deepen and broaden key strategic partnerships
    • Review with local markets existing contractual agreements and build pathway to migrate
    • Share best practice on partner management and common issues impacting our corporate customers
    • Support product managers in responding to commercial analysis once services are live to have common commercial frameworks

     Identify innovation and cost-saving initiatives:

    • Reduce dependency on third party suppliers to support sales activities
    • Identify new feature ideas to feed into the product roadmap, re-assure partners and expedite the platform approach
    • Address escalations/conflicts of interest and work with stakeholders to find ways of mitigating these
    • Flexibly support business development needs across credit, savings, wealth and insurance

     Build governance mechanisms to respond to partners’ needs

     

    • Set-up cadence of governance meetings with partners to build trust and for effective relationship management
    • Liaise with internal stakeholders such as VGE, Vodacash FS to successfully implement partnerships and address any conflicts of interest

     

     

    QUALIFICATIONS

    The Financial Services Agile Release Train (ART) delivers a wide set of financial products and services, above and beyond normal financial transactions, including insurance, savings and wealth. These highly complex products provide Merchant and Consumer loans and Overdrafts, and future products will need to be driven from RFP, to in-market pilots and innovations to mature products.

     Additional expertise needed: Deep understanding of Financial Products and key industry players required, having previously delivered external negotiations within FinTech and Banking Sector, and engagement with regulatory bodies is a plus. >5 years of professional experience with experience at a bank, regulatory body, fintech or other relevant digital business

    Senior Manager – M-PESA Universal Payments

    Detailed Description

    Safaricom aims to offer an expanded set to payment capabilities to merchants and consumers by enabling secure and convenient payment solutions working with various industry players. The Role holder is responsible for the managing universal payments propositions as well as execution of the strategy. Universal Payments includes and is not limited to global payments propositions, remittances, interoperable payments with universal payments service providers and relevant payment services beyond the M-PESA ecosystem.

    The incumbent will interact with all stakeholders with respect to universal payments i.e. the regulator, various strategic partners, consumer and merchant facing teams to ensure sustained growth while managing the contractual obligations and commercials. The incumbent will also ensure additional and adequate ongoing strategic and tactical focus on the proper execution of the overall universal payment’s strategy. The role holder aims to set and manage the M-PESA Product, including roll out, on-going performance and enhancement of the product.

    The role reports to Tribe lead – Next Financial Service.

    Roles and Responsibilities

    • Develop and manage the overall Universal Payments strategy from strategic planning through to tactical execution
    • Support the execution of M-PESA Africa Payments strategy at both Opco and group levels
    • Develop new Business Models around Universal Payments that will ensure that Safaricom keeps its strategic focus of financial inclusion by exploiting new business opportunities beyond traditional and existing payment services
    • Embrace new-to-world technology and disruptive business models to ensure Safaricom remains Africa market leader in payments. Leverage technology to widen the current scope of payments on M-PESA towards driving Financial Inclusion
    • Own the product roadmap of the organization platform thinking holistically across the entire value chain to further the organization’s position in the market
    • Guide the business in the growth of Universal Payments within the Payments Ecosystem
    • Develop a strategic partnership framework that defines the contractual engagement for onboarding new partners and managing existing partners in the payment’s ecosystem
    • Work closely with existing and new partners to identifying opportunities that will ensure growth on revenue. Target, prospect, develop and strengthen partnerships with other organizations that enable to scale the financial services payments business
    • Ensure partners are fulfilling their contractual obligations and that the company is providing the required support for them to do so.
    • Coordinate the management of ongoing relationships with existing partners and where relevant, leverage those relationships to greater collective impact

    • In liaison with the regulatory team drive deeper relationships with the regulator to ensure approval of new products and services
    • Working closely with the corporate security teams ensure proper due diligence and compliance monitoring on existing and new partners and payment processes
    • Ensure compliance with the National Payments Systems (NPS) Act and Money Remitters adherence to FATF recommendations and POCAMLA Act.
    • Facilitate a strong and open relationship with the regulator to ensure continual improvement with a better understanding of the regulatory expectations and regulatory agenda.
    • Coordinate responses to regulatory requests including consultation papers providing key stakeholders with advice and guidance on regulatory expectations.
    • Ensure statutory reports are duly submitted to the Central Bank of Kenya in an accurate and timely manner
    • Lead critical planning meetings, status updates, business reviews and other communication related to the payments industry.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor’s degree in a related field from a recognized university
    • A Master’s degree will be an added advantage
    • At least 5-8 years’ experience in a large corporate or multinational company, demonstrated progression and at least 3 years’ experience in a Telecommunications company handling partnerships, business development and strategy formulation.

    Role Description

     M-Pesa is now making strides to strengthen its offering to businesses in our operating countries, making it easier for them to get onboarded and to accept M-Pesa payments across channels, including in-store payments, online payments, and payments through social media.

     In your role, you will be assessing commercial opportunity and market readiness for mobile money in new markets. Collaborate with MPA product managers and external stakeholders to develop the product roadmap and relevant path to launch and scale (incl. products & service, distribution, business processes etc.)

    Lead the business proposition for the launch of specific products in new markets, including the definition of the requirements and specifications of the product, as well as the management of commercial, contractual and regulatory work streams.

    Determine specifications, pricing, and go to market planning for M-PESA products and services in new markets and ensure that M-PESA products and services meet all the set KPIs post launch

    What you will be executing

    Development of a strong product strategy and roadmap for each new market:

    • Conduct thorough in-market commercial discovery using to determine customers' needs and desires.
    • Articulate market requirements, consumer trends and opportunities for M-PESA products and services
    • Identify opportunities for M-PESA products and services innovation and enhancements
    • Assesses market competition by comparing the company's product to competitors' products within payments and financial services industry.
    • Focus on customer needs and a simple customer experience
    • Develop new business relationships with third parties to deliver added value and efficiency to all markets to deliver the defined services according to specifications in time and quality

    Product planning and launch management:

    • Recommend the nature and scope of the launch portfolrio and as well as future M-PESA products and services investigating new product ideas and/or product changes.
    • Drive engagement with the off-footprint partners to strengthen commercial and financial analysis in roadmap decision and implementing products & enablers.
    • Bring new M-PESA products to market by analyzing proposed product requirements and product development programs.
    • Define the long-term strategy of M-PESA and create product road map
    • Prepare M-PESA products and services documents including market requirement documents and product use cases to drive product activity
    • Develop pricing strategies and product policies
    • Provide technical & thought leadership throughout various stages of solution lifecycle – planning, design, specification, implementation and launch
    • Create use cases and detailed product roadmap documents to articulate desired features and functionalities to developers and designers

    Lead the business proposition for the launch of the product in new markets:

    • Engage with the leaders in new markets to support investment decision, assess commercial opportunity and market readiness (including regulatory and senior management buy-in).
    • Work with the market teams and leadership to develop the relevant path to launch and scale (products & service, distribution, business processes, contracts, compliance…).

     

     

    QUALIFICATIONS

     

    Apply if you have:

    • Bachelor’s degree is required (business degree, engineering degree plus commercial knowledge), a master’s degree in a related field is preferred.
    • 7+ years of professional experience with at least 5 years in payments and/or mobile money/merchant acquiring.
    • Relevant graduate education Previous experience in product management functions in the mobile or software industry with a track record of creation and delivery of consumer services
    • Strong understanding of mobile and internet technologies as well as knowledge of mobile applications for the major mobile platforms (Android & iOS).
    • High customer focus and ability to communicate effectively; inspire and influence
    • Experience in a complex, multi-national environment 
    • Expertise in developing partnerships with third parties.
    • Experience driving product roadmaps and working with agile squads in product development.
    • International experience and multicultural sensitivity.
    • Analytical bent of mind, a structured thinker with strong business acumen.
    • Self-starter with exceptional people, presentation, and communication skills.
    • Solid influencing and negotiation skills.
    • Passion for, and commitment to driving mobile money growth and innovation.
