    Engineer - Data Center & Operations

    Description

    Reporting to the Data Center & Operations Lead, the Data Center Operations Engineer ensures uninterrupted operations of data center infrastructure, including power, cooling, and security systems.

    Engineer - Regional Network Optimization - Nairobi East

    Description

    Reporting to the Manager - Regional Optimization – Nairobi East, the position holder will be responsible for ensuring the optimal performance of radio access networks (RAN), including 2G, 3G, 4G, and emerging 5G technologies. This position demands a blend of advanced technical expertise, data-driven cluster optimization skills, and a customer-centric mindset to deliver exceptional network quality and user experience. The successful candidate will collaborate with cross-functional teams, lead optimization initiatives, and align efforts with commercial goals to drive revenue growth and customer satisfaction.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Design, monitor, and optimize radio network parameters to enhance coverage, capacity, and quality across 3G, 4G, and 5G networks. 
    • Analyze signal strength metrics (e.g., RSSI, RSRP in dBm) and troubleshoot issues related to interference, handover failures, and call drops. 
    • Perform drive tests, post-process data, and implement corrective actions to address coverage gaps and capacity constraints. 
    • Utilize optimization tools (e.g., TEMS, Nemo, Atoll) and network management systems to assess and fine-tune RAN performance. 
    • Stay abreast of evolving RAN technologies and recommend upgrades or parameter adjustments to maintain competitive network performance.
    • Lead end-to-end cluster optimization projects, ensuring KPIs (e.g., throughput, latency, drop rate) meet or exceed targets. 
    • Conduct pre- and post-optimization analysis for network rollouts, expansions, or technology migrations (e.g., 2G, 3G to 4G transitions). 
    • Identify and resolve cluster-specific issues such as overshooting cells, pilot pollution, or load imbalance using statistical and predictive modeling. 
    • Collaborate with planning teams to align cluster designs with traffic demand and geographical challenges.
    • Guide junior engineers and field technicians in optimization techniques, fostering a culture of technical excellence and accountability. 
    • Coordinate with cross-functional teams, including RF planning, core network, and operations, to execute network improvement projects. 
    • Present optimization reports and actionable insights to senior management, translating technical data into strategic recommendations.
    • Align network optimization efforts with commercial objectives, such as reducing churn, increasing data usage, and supporting marketing campaigns. 
    • Partner with sales and commercial teams to prioritize high-value areas (e.g., urban centers, enterprise zones) for enhanced network performance. 
    • Track and report on optimization contributions to revenue growth and customer acquisition/retention metrics.
    • Champion a customer-first approach by ensuring network reliability, speed, and availability meet or exceed subscriber expectations. 
    • Proactively identify and mitigate network issues that impact user experience, such as poor voice quality or slow data speeds. 
    • Support the company’s mission to deliver world-class connectivity by driving continuous improvement in network KPIs and service quality.
    • Maintain detailed records of optimization activities, parameter changes, and performance outcomes for audit and reference purposes. 
    • Ensure adherence to regulatory standards (e.g., spectrum usage, emissions) and internal policies during optimization processes.

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in electrical or Telecommunication Engineering
    • Proficiency in RAN technologies (3G UMTS, 4G LTE, 5G NR) and their associated KPIs. 
    • Strong understanding of signal strength measurement (e.g., dBm, RSRP, SINR) and radio propagation principles. 
    • Hands-on experience with optimization tools (e.g., SoC, Geosythesis, Atoll, Nokia NetAct, Huawei U2000, TEMS Investigation) and drive test analysis. 
    • Knowledge of scripting (e.g., Python, SQL) for data analysis and automation is a plus.
    • Proven ability to manage and optimize multi-cell clusters, balancing coverage, capacity, and interference. 
    • Experience with parameter tuning, antenna optimization, and load-sharing techniques.
    • Demonstrated ability to lead projects and mentor team members in a fast-paced environment. 
    • Excellent communication skills to bridge technical and commercial teams effectively.
    • Results-driven mindset with a track record of meeting or exceeding performance targets. 
    • Ability to translate technical improvements into tangible business outcomes.

    Engineer – Datacenter & Campus Networks - Planning and Design

    Description

    Reporting to the Senior Manager - Transport IP Planning & Design, the role holder is responsible for deploying the Data Centre & Campus Networks, the LAN, WLAN and WAN projects/solutions, Inter/Intra Telco and IT Data center connectivity Inter Office voice and video Communications.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Planning and Design of Datacenter & Campus Networks Solution to meet current as well as long term requirements 
    • Compilation of Datacenter & Campus Networks topologies, Network Diagrams, schematics and floor layout plans 
    • Plan and Oversee resources to conduct surveys and implementation plans that ensures timely implementation as per the project timelines
    • Timely delivery of key milestones and ensuring that standards are adhered to at all times in the projects Rollout including trials and POCs. 
    • Liaison with implementation and support teams to ensure rollout follows the design and meets both the business and engineering specifications 
    • Definition of network KPIs , SLAs and acceptance procedures for new Services and management of service Transition to Support teams
    • Overall Infrastructure resources utilization such as Materials, Spares, bandwidths, maintained within KPI targets as per KPI doc
    • Capacity for traffic growth to be provided in accordance with overall projected growth · Planned expansions and upgrades to meet the capacity objectives at all times. 
    • Meet all the capacity and quality KPI’s in accordance with Tx target 
    • Timely identification and mitigation of all potential Bottlenecks to guarantee capacity and Quality.
    • New enhanced features to be implemented as per the roadmap to continuously improve network capacity, quality and user experience. 
    • Planning, reviewing, optimization and evaluating the network performance as per own designs 
    • Impact Assessment Report of proposed new Datacenter systems, services showing anticipated improvement of identified KPI – network situation before/after change released during evaluation process.
    • Creation of integration and functional acceptance tests documentation for every new Datacenter systems/products/services before
    • Running of trials/POCs and subsequent recommendations for approval
    • Development of design principles to guide future deployment

    Qualifications

    • Degree in Electrical, Electronics, Telecommunication Engineering, IT Computer Science or a closely related numerate discipline
    • Above 5 years’ experience in a busy IT or Telecommunications environment –Involved in Strategy Modeling, Planning, Design and Optimization of Datacenter and Campus Networks 
    • In-depth understanding of Cisco Nexus NXOS Datacenter Networks Gear 
    • Router, Switches and NG firewall configuration (Cisco and Huawei) 
    • Mastery of IPSec Configuration and Troubleshooting Skills 
    • Network design and implementation experience, including working knowledge of IP addressing, TCP/IP Protocols, LAN and WAN configurations
    • Knowledge in Cisco Unified Collaboration systems for Voice and Video Communications. 
    • Minimum CCNP or HCNP Network Certifications in any line (RS, Security, Wireless, Voice)

    Engineer - Data Center Mechanical

    Description

    Reporting to the Senior Lead, Data Center, the role holder is responsible for providing technical expertise and oversight in the planning, design, and operational support of mechanical services within Safaricom’s data center and access sites. This role ensures the efficient and reliable performance of critical infrastructure, including diesel generators, air conditioning, mechanical ventilation, fire suppression, plumbing, and drainage systems. The engineer will work closely with project teams to ensure that all mechanical services meet required specifications, are delivered on time, and within budget. Additionally, this role will drive the ISO 50001 energy efficiency program, coordinate design project activities, and establish best practices for mechanical service installations and operations. The Mechanical Engineer will serve as a key communication link between internal and external stakeholders, ensuring the successful design, installation, commissioning, and handover of mechanical systems. They will also focus on driving energy efficiency initiatives and ensuring compliance with industry standards, best practices, and Safaricom’s strategic objectives.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Create and oversee the implementation of short and long-term data center strategy
    • Create and oversee the implementation of short and long-term projects and strategies that increase energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and minimize unnecessary consumption. Implement energy-related cost-saving measures and achieve set targets on the same.
    • Regularly perform energy audits to help monitor performance with respect to energy consumption, come up with improvement plans to drive efficiency and ensure implementation of the same. Central coordination of energy audits done by partners and colleagues will also be required.
    • Oversee design of mechanical services (diesel generators, air conditioning, mechanical ventilation, fire suppression, plumbing and drainage) to ensure projects are delivered at the required specifications, on time and within budget.
    • Ensure that system efficiency is maximized.
    • Manage policies, standards and guidelines to help drive the sustainability agenda with respect to energy management. Ensure end to end stakeholder buy-in and adherence.
    • ISO 50001 Program manager 
    • Work closely with sustainability officer/lead for reporting
    • Validate carbon footprint input data. Calculate carbon footprint monthly and highlight improvement areas. Ensure that set targets are met.
    • Develop, implement and continuously review energy policy and implementation programs.
    • Ensure compliance with statutory regulations in energy matters and align the organizations energy practices with best practices globally.
    • Ensure compliance with environmental health and safety regulations.
    • Maintenance and upgrades of Fire 
    • Approval of specifications, drawings, BQs and other project design documents

    Qualifications

    • First Degree in Engineering (Mechanical- HVAC or Mechatronics) from a recognized University. 
    • Registration with relevant government professional body in charge engineering is added advantage.
    • Knowledge and certification and Fire Suppression Systems
    • Post Graduate training in Energy or Professional certification in Energy such as Certified Energy Manager (CEM) or Certified Energy Auditor (CEA) or Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP) is added advantage
    • Over 5 years of work experience in renewable energy and/or energy efficiency including designs and operations of which 3 years must have been in a telecommunications environment.
    • Mechanical Engineering services design experience in a telecommunications or mission critical IT data centre environment
    • Experience in greenhouse gas inventories/reporting is a plus. 
    • Strong management and organizational skills
    • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities in a fast paced environment and consistently meets deadlines
    • Strong negotiation and influencing skills at multiple organizational levels
    • MS Office, MS Project and AutoCAD proficiency is required
    • Knowledge of relevant legislation governing energy efficiency and carbon emissions/environment.
    • A good understanding of mechanical services (diesel generators, air conditioning, mechanical ventilation, fire suppression, plumbing)
