  • The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the UN agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. The Urban Economy Branch of UN-Habitat has the mandate to promote local capabilities of local governments to develop financial instruments to keep pace with the demands of rapid urbanization. The Urban Economy Branch has the mandate to promote plans and provide support for more efficient, socially inclusive, better integrated and connected cities that foster sustainable urban development.

    Outreach and Communication Intern

     

    Responsibilities

    Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

    Under the supervision of the Coordinator of the Research and Capacity Development Branch, the intern’s duties may include, but are not limited to:
    -Develop and implement an integrated strategic outreach and communication plan for the City Prosperity Initiative (CPI)
    -Coordinate and provide expertise to editorial, digital, media relations and design of the CPI
    -Ensure that the CPI message is aligned with its mission, the UN-Habitat mandate, the 2030 Agenda as well as the New Urban Agenda.
    -Ensure that communications, in all formats, are developed and executed at an exemplary level and consistent in messaging and brand standards.
    -Coordinate and develop strategic outreach initiatives for increasing awareness around the CPI
    -Oversee and provide content to the to the outreach to the communication tools and platform
    -Assist in the preparation of documentation and in the communication and information management for projects of the City Prosperity Initiative, including the development of partnerships with cities and multilateral organization
    -Communicate with media and other interested parties, within and outside the UN system, to announce the updates and any information regarding the CPI
    -Conceptualize and plan events and outreach meetings on the CPI
    -Prepare briefing papers, case studies, research papers, and presentations on related topics.
    -Undertake other assignments as required for the development and implementation of the work programme of the Research and Capacity Development Branch
    -Participate in the daily operations of the Branch by supporting the staff in the performance of their tasks and responsibilities, including taking part in meetings, project reviews, etc.; As required, participate in meetings of the Branch as required to share findings, brainstorm on issues and contribute to the development of the prosperous cities initiative.

    Education

    Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
    a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
    b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
    c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

    Be computer literate in standard software applications.

    Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

    Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

    Preferred area of study:
    Studies in communications,Marketing and Journalism preferred.Studies related to city-branding will be considered beneficial.

    Work Experience

    Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme. Academic or research experience would be an asset.

    Languages

    English is the working language of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English and Spanish is required. Knowledge of Arabic, French or Chinese is desirable.

    Urban planning and Design

     

    Responsibilities

    Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

    The intern will work under the direct supervision of an Urban Planning Expert from the CPEDU and assist in development of the Urban Planning agenda activities of the Urban Planning and Design Branch as well as other Units in UN-Habitat. The specific positions offered for the interns are:
    •Support the UPDB/CPEDU Coordinator and Head of Unit (Policy and management profile)
    •Support the Urban Planning and Design LAB (Urban planning and design profile)
    •Support the Kenya Programme (Urban planning and design profile)
    •Support the Public Space Programme (Urban planning and design profile)
    •Support the Communication Strategy of the UPDB, CPEDU and Urban Planning and Design LAB (Communication and technology profile)
    • Support the Planning and Technology workteam (Technology, web design and programming profile)
    Responsibilities
    Assist in the definition and implementation of the UPDB and CPEDU activities and outputs, such as urban planning methodology review, development of projects and tools, documentation and evaluation of practice, and organization of expert meetings, preparation of field missions and scoping missions.
    •Support the designated programme (LAB, Kenya, Public Space, Planning and Technology) in the development of concrete urban planning and design projects, workshops, trainings, Charrettes and different tools to promote urban planning and design
    •Assist in the development of UN-Habitat/UPDB urban planning policy documents, guidelines, information materials, presentations through identification and review of relevant publications and documents, drafting and commenting on documents, and assisting in producing information materials.
    •Update and maintain records of the Urban Planning work being undertaken by UN-Habitat and partners
    •Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

    Environmental Management Intern

     

    Responsibilities

    Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

    The internship is located in the Water and Sanitation Unit, Urban Basic Services Branch and the intern will primarily work with the Environmental Management System (EMS) team that are conducting environmental baseline studies in Somalia in the preparatory phase for the design and implementation of Environmental Management System in UNSOS sector hubs.
    Responsibilities:
    Under the direct supervision of the Human Settlement Officer (Water and Sanitation Unit), the intern will:
    -Assist the project management team in the design and pilot implementation of an Environmental Management System in Somalia
    -Assist in the review and writing of the minutes of meetings, summaries, and progress reports related to the execution of environmental baseline studies
    -Assist on other projects under the Water and Sanitation Unit that are related to the interest and educational background of the intern.
    -Assist in organizing expert group meetings, consultative and other meetings and conferences; support outreach activities
    -Assist with the production of communication materials and updates for the Unit’s websites;
    -Assist with any other duties

    Programme Support - Water quality & communication support

     

    Responsibilities

    Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.

    Under the direct supervision of the Head, Freshwater Ecosystems Unit, the intern will:
    1.Support the tasks under the planning and implementation of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG), freshwater monitoring, implementation, capacity-building, reporting and awareness-raising work globally and within project countries: In particular support of UN Environment's contributions to the Integrated monitoring of water and sanitation related Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) across the four target areas on water.
    2.Support the maintenance of the website on UN Environment’s Water Quality Initiatives:
    a.Update the webpage on UN Environment’s Water Quality Initiatives;
    b.Prepare the content of the website including brochures, leaflets, posters, reports etc. and update the website;
    c.Suggest possible linkages to websites of partners.
    3.Undertake any other routine duties as may be required from time to time, such as assisting with drafting correspondences e.g. Executive Office- logs, briefing notes etc.
