    Event Consultant

    Scope of Work (SOW)

Program Context: Africa is young – and it continues to get younger as populations around the world are getting older. With over 40% of its working age population between the ages of 15 and 24, it is the youngest continent in the world.

There are over 200 million young men and women in Africa today and, according to African Economic Outlook, that number will double by 2045. According to the World Bank youth account for at least 60% of unemployed people in African countries. Africa’s youth population can lift the continent and the world.

Technology has potential to unlock economic growth and create new work opportunities for youth in a wide range of sectors from agriculture to the services needed in growing towns and cities.

Identifying these opportunities for growth and harnessing technology to unlock them creates jobs for youth today while building the skills that will be required in the future of work.

Impact Labs Overview: Impact Labs, collaboration between Google and Mercy Corps, is identifying and testing creative, technology-enhanced solutions to the global youth unemployment challenge. The initiative provides technical and financial support to startups and more established companies to enable them to further their innovative idea to create new work opportunities for young people in East Africa.

Mercy Corps is committed to learning and contributing to the global dialogue on youth unemployment and the intersection of technology and work.

Event Overview: At Mercy Corps, we understand that in order to tackle tough challenges, we must work across the private, public and social sectors to spark, scale and sustain change. We’re also inspired by the possibility and determination of young people around the world and believe that youth and technology can play a key role in driving lasting, positive change.

With that spirit in mind, Mercy Corps is convening an event in Nairobi on May 23 centered on innovative, tech-enabled solutions for youth employment in East Africa. We will bring together 100 thought leaders, entrepreneurs, innovators, and practitioners to highlight groundbreaking approaches to youth employment in Africa and brainstorm ways to overcome persistent challenges.

The event will consist of TED-style talks, panel discussions and debates, and workshops for participants to engage with each other to build meaningful relationships and spark new ideas.

    Skills and Experience

The consultant should be dynamic and excited about the potential of technology to unlock work opportunities for youth in East Africa. They should have experience organizing at least 3 events of this type in the past 5 years within East Africa.

They should have capacity to deliver on all of the areas of work within the timeline and have a clear proof in their proposal. Consultants with their own network with innovators in youth entrepreneurship and technology in East Africa would be a plus.

Timeline, Budget & Terms of Payment

This consultancy will be effective for a period of up to approximately 9 weeks, from April 2 to June 1 2018.

It is estimated the work will take place over 10 weeks; with the consultant devoting one full day a week to working onsite with the Mercy Corps and The Action Group (TAG) teams on the event planning and preparations. The daily level of effort is estimated at 2 hours daily in April but will increase in May to 50%, and specific events like the rapporteur training and briefing will take full days. A full work plan will be developed outlining the detailed number of days per task.

Given the additional learning capture and synthesis roles, the consultant will work with an associate to ensure effective delivery of the work plan, especially in January.

Payment for services will be made based on approval of deliverables by the Impact Labs Partnership Manager or Director.
