    ML Developer Intern, Community of Practice

    Project Overview and Role:

    • Funded under the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) through a cooperative agreement with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Palladium Development and Consultancy Kenya Ltd (Palladium Kenya) implements a 5-year HIS project in support of the Kenya Ministry of Health, county governments, and healthcare service delivery partners to implement technological innovations in health information systems.

     Community of Practice Internship:

    • HIS Community of Practice (CoP) is a program of KenyaHMIS project that engages and collaborates with implementers, developers, and users to realize the adoption and sustainable use of open source HIS products. A key outcome of this program is to develop and make available skilled practitioners able to support Kenya’s HIS solutions in the future.
    • Community of Practice internship is a 3-month program jointly run with JKUAT-DHARC to get technology students to gain industry experience working on HIS solutions developed and implemented by the KenyaHMIS project. The June – September intake will focus on innovating and extending solutions for KenyaEMR and National Data Warehouse (DWH) platforms.

     Reporting and Supervision:

    • Reporting to Community Manager, 2 community interns will be embedded with developer teams of KenyaEMR and DWH to develop or enhance solutions that support EMR and DWH platforms in line with defined KenyaHMIS systems priorities. Technical supervision will be under respective team leads. Indicate if applying for EMR or DWH position.

     Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

     To discharge the above mandate the intern will be required to perform the following technical system development duties:

    • Code, debug, and test applications in collaboration with the team.
    • Create documentation and test new software applications.
    • Research, investigate, and fix a wide range of technical issues.
    • Collaborate with the product management team as required.
    • Evaluate new application concepts.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Holder of/pursuing a bachelor’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, or a related area. Current students who demonstrate software development mastery are encouraged to apply.
    • Mobile app development experience
    • Ability to work independently and meet tight deadlines.
    • Good problem-solving and well-developed analytical skills
    • Ability to work/adapt to cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment
    • Strong communication and presentation skills
    • Technical programming skills will be an added advantage. These include an understanding of data structures and data modeling, working knowledge of mobile app frameworks and libraries, the ability to write code in Java, and experience in front-end development.
