    Post-Doctoral Research Associate, One Health Regional Network for the Horn Of Africa (Horn) Project, School of Public Health

    The project One Health Regional Network for the Horn of Africa (HORN) is a collaborative research and training programme between the University of Nairobi and University of Liverpool, implemented by the Department of Public Health Pharmacology and Toxicology of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the School of Public Health, University of Nairobi. The project addressed One Health, the concept that the health of people, animals and the environment are inextricably linked.

    The position The project is recruiting two post-doctoral research associates in interests in understanding and improving human and animal health in Africa by making advances in the fields if inter-linkages of human, animal and ecosystems health. The successful candidate will be based in Kenya. The areas of research to be undertaken will be flexible but the following skills and backgrounds will be prioritized: Public Health; Microbiologist Specializing In Antimicrobial Resistance; Veterinary Epidemiologist; Livestock Economist; Health Economist; Anthropologist; Public Health Epidemiologist; Data Scientist; Vector Biolgist; And One Health Specialist.

    Key research areas

    • Zoonoses at the wildlife/livestock and human interphases focusing on bacterial/viral/parasitic zoonoses
    • Zoonoses along the livestock product value chains
    • Zoonoses at the domestic/wildlife/livestock and human interphase focusing on sociocultural, socioeconomic aspects aspects and their impact on livelihoods
    • Antimicrobial resistance for bacterial isolates obtained from zoonoses at the wildlife/livestock and human interphase and livestock product value chains
    • Environmental health, socioeconomic and culture os people on disease occurence with emphasis on interlinkages of human, animal and ecosystem health
    • Multidicsiplinary OH research incorporating human health, animal health, wildlife and ecosystems health with focus on sociocultural, socioeconomic impact, food security, climate change and conflict.

    Job description

    • Undertake and contribute to an internationally-excellent research programme relevant to One Health with supervision and mentoring provided by project academic leads.
    • Support and mentor other HORN-funded researchers undertaking research placements in Kenya and elsewhere. 
    • Be responsible for own (supervised) research programme in Kenya including managing a financial budget.
    • Contribute to the design, development and delivery of teaching materials in relevant areas.
    • Travel within Kenya, to the UK and other HORN-partner countries as required
    • Interact with project partners in Kenya, UK and other HORN-countries in a professional manner.
    • Assist the academic leads and project managers in all activities related to the delivery of HORN’s objectives
    • Liaise closely with the co-PI based at the School of Public Health, College of Health Scicences and co-PI based at the Department of Public Health Pharmacology and Toxicology, College of Agriculture and Vaterinary Sciences, University of Nairobi.

    Qualifications

    • PhD obtained in the last 5 years in a relevant area from a university recognized by the Senate of the University of Nairobi
    • Publication of international quality research papers appropriate for your level of experience
    • Good interpersonal skills, including cultural sensitivity
    • Computer and analytical skills 
    • Ability to work both individually and as ateam
    • Resilient, adaptable and motivated
    • Experience of managing a research financial budget and undertaking research in a developing country setting is desirable

    Bioinformatician, Kenya Aids Vaccine Initiative - Institute of Clinical Research

    The program This is a position in the Indo-African Dengue project on pathogen sequencing, whose station is at the KAVI-Institute of Clinical Research, College of Health Sciences.

    Qualifications: Applicants must have a Bachelors degree in medical or biological sciences and a Masters or PhD degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology or a related field. They should also have skills to perform bioinformatics analysis. Those with skills in performing wet-lab assays and preparation of manuscripts will have added advantage.

    Study Coordinator, Mental Health Interventions for Pregnant Adolescents, Inspire Project, Department of Psychiatry

    Background The US Fogart International Centre and National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH) has awarded an K43 grant entitled implementing mental health interventions for pregnant adolescents in primary care context to the University of Nairobi. The grant award is for the period September 2018 up to April 2023.

    Job description

    • Oversee firld visits for data collection and follow ups
    • Conducting interviews and follow up assessments
    • Sourcing participants in liaison with other health workers
    • Helping in preparing the delivery of various interventions 
    • Regular communication with project team
    • Oversee research activities 
    • Writing of progress reports

    Qualifications

    • Masters degree in Clinical Psychology or a related field from a recognized institution
    • At least two years experience of work in community mental health and delivering cum supervising psychotherapists in primary health care facilities of Nairobi 
    • Experience in managing donor funded health professional eduication/training in higher institutions will be desirable.
    • Demonstrate ability to have productive interactions with stakeholders, partners and students involved in mental health and have some exposure to working on mental health projects
    • A record os success in operating in a team environment to achieve organizational goals
    • Demonstrate effeciveness in managing multiple priorities and programmes
    • Exposure to evidence-based psychotherapies like IPT

    Lead Nurse, Dapper Project, Department of Psychiatry

    Qualifications

    The candidate is expected to have:

    Job description

    • Assessment and treatment of study participants assigned with treatment with fluoxetine
    • Establishment of an outpatient clinic at Kisumu County Hospital in collaboration with the staff/health providers 
    • Assessment of other outpatients coming to or referred to psychiatric clinic
    • At least weekly internet telephone or email updates with principal investigators, local coinvestigators and UCSF based teams
    • Taking charge and assigning participants to locum nurses who may be recruited to the study as providers
    • Participate in the organization of the study participant recruitment, and participate in flow for fluoxetine arm of the intervention.
    • Collaborate with and provide feedback to the lead study coordinators, identify any problems or crises with study personnel or participants and bring them quickly to the attention of lead and assistant study coordinators and principals investigators as necessary.

    The Accountant is responsible for supporting budget preparation, invoicing and accounts reconciliation. The position supports use of resources efficiently and effectively as well as to ensure that activities are within the budget. It also ensures that financial reports are prepared and submitted on time and also ensureing compliance with donor regulations. They are also expected to take up any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

    Qualifications

    The candidate is expected to have: 

    • Bachelors degree in Commerce, Economics or Accounting from a recognized institution.
    • Qualified as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK)
    • Five years work experience of which two must be in donor funded projects, preferrable clinical research projects.
