    Research Officer I–AICCRA

    The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Research Officer to assist the Policy Engagement Specialist with the continental operations of the policy theme within the Accelerating Impacts of CGIAR Climate Research for Africa (AICCRA) project as well as the Kenya country activities of the One CGIAR initiative on Low Emission Food Systems (Mitigate+) and other project activities.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Play a supporting role in the implementation of activities under AICCRA Theme 1 (Policies and Priorities for Climate Smart Agriculture), including organizing and attending meetings with national, regional and continental partners such as the African Group of Negotiators Expert Support (AGNES), African Union and Eastern African Farmers Federation to support implementation of joint activities such as building capacity of climate change negotiators and co-developing knowledge products to support climate negotiations
    • Contribute to AICCRA Theme 1 publications, including info notes, journal articles and other outreach products
    • Support Theme 1 team management, develop and discuss workplans, contribute to monitoring, evaluation and reporting, and support the development of a Phase 2 proposal by participating in design meetings, writing specific proposal sections and helping develop a theory of change and impact pathway if necessary
    • Assist in coordinating the country activities of the Low Emissions Food System initiative (Mitigate+)
    • Support stakeholder engagement processes for the Low Emissions Food System Initiative (Mitigate+) in Kenya through organizing workshops, inviting attendees, facilitating breakout discussions and writing workshop output reports
    • Contribute to Mitigate+ outputs such as reports and briefs on NDC analyses and country food systems contributions to greenhouse gas emissions
    • Support resource mobilization efforts as needed with background research and contributing to proposal writing
    • Perform any other related duties as may be assigned

    Requirements

    • Master’s degree in agriculture, animal science, climate change or other relevant field
    • Relevant professional certification
    • Three years’ experience
    • Theoretical background in climate impacts on agriculture and food systems
    • Experience and knowledge in Kenya stakeholder engagement processes
    • Good computer skills in Excel, Word, Power Point and Teams.

    Housekeeper

    International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Housekeeper to provide efficient and orderly management of cleaning for the Director General’s residence.  

    Key Responsibilities

    • Keep all areas of the residence clean and tidy as per the laid down standards
    • Use and maintain all housekeeping equipment and tools in a safe, clean and working condition and report any damages and deficits
    • Empty, clean trash containers and dispose of wastes in designated areas in a sanitary manner
    • Tidy up rooms and make up beds such as changing linens
    • Monitor and replenish household supplies for instance in the bathrooms to maintain adequate levels
    • Perform laundry work including sorting, washing, ironing and storing appropriately
    • Observe rules and regulation to ensure own health and safety and that of the residents
    • Take care of pets by grooming, exercising, and/or feeding them
    • Observe precautions required to protect the house property, report damage or theft accordingly
    • Perform any other duties as may be required

    Requirements

    • Certificate in housekeeping and laundry   
    • Three years relevant experience
    • Ability to communicate fluently in English, both written and verbal
    • High sense of confidentiality
    • Skills in food production will be an added advantage
    • Experience working in a diplomatic residence will be a plus
    • Commitment to high standards of housekeeping whilst respecting the individual wishes of the residents

    Cook

    International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a cook to manage the operation and organization of the kitchen and all food-related activities, including the presentation and serving of food in the Director General’s residence.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Prepare and schedule recipes ensuring they are balanced and cover client preferences and taste
    • Prepare food and handle food in line with laid down standards to ensure hygienic standards are maintained
    • Maintain a clean and sanitary workstation area including tables, shelves, grills, broilers fryers, convection oven and refrigeration
    • Maintain kitchen equipment and tools and report any damages and faults for repair
    • Monitor inventory and replenish kitchen supplies to maintain adequate levels
    • Follow proper plate presentation and garnish set up for all dishes

    Financial planning and analysis (FP&A) Accountant

    Job purposes

    The position will ensure quality and accuracy of data, financial reports, to ensure financial reporting and processes run in a timely and efficient manner. This role brings hands-on finance and business intelligence experience to implement financial reports automation, impactful, actionable insights that inform strategic decision making. The role holder will provide relevant financial analysis and support to inform and enable effective financial decisions and planning.  The position will ensure full costing and cost recovery across the institute.

    Key Responsibilities

    Management Reporting: 

    • Prepare timely and accurate monthly management and financial reports with clear analysis and commentary to deliver impactful, actionable insights.
    • Implement business intelligence tools and dashboards for financial and management reporting through automation platforms -Power BI, Agresso
    • Prepare analytical trends, forecasts, financial modelling tools, status updates and other ad hoc analysis depicting different performance areas - as and when required.
    • Develop and report on key financial indicators that highlight financial health of the institute.
    • Undertake detailed data driven variance analysis and provide recommendations for efficiencies in financial performance.
    • Ensuring continuous user awareness and improvement on reports and processes to create efficiencies while supporting various users in awareness and interpretation of the reports.

    Budgeting, forecasting and analysis:

    • Performing budget analysis to come up with trends, variances, insights and meaningful reports.
    • Preparing short- and long-term financial forecasting to inform decision making.
    • Ensuring automation and updating of budget templates to ensure completeness and accuracy and facilitate sharing of the same (and related guidelines) to budget holders on a timely basis.
    • Review all budgets to ensure consistency, accuracy and completeness and share review outcomes with budget holders for budget revisions, where necessary.
    • Evaluating budget proposals and funding requests and providing guidance on identified gaps.
    • Develop customized templates for budget submissions utilizing advanced Excel and automated budgeting platform.
    • Explore ways of improving the budgeting process to ensure efficiency – mainly through Agresso and/or other systems including automation.

    Full costing:

    • Accurate costing and pooling of identical services together, identifying cost drivers and ensuring full charge/recovery by all units.
    • Assess different costing approaches for suitability to the institute’s business model and to ensure each unit/project pays its fair share of costs.
    • Review incomes for selected units to ensure complete recoveries, review cost drivers and liaising with unit heads to identify alternative recovery mechanisms.
    • Conduct cost-benefit analysis for different investment proposals and advise on suitability.
    • Develop and automate costing template factoring key adjustments such as inflation.
    • Maintain an updated product listing for all Institute services, their cost basis, current prices, users and the unit providing the services.

    Others:

    • Ensure proper archiving of all documentation relating to this function both in physical and soft copy.
    • Improving data visualizations and insights, workflows, processes and ERP enhancements
    • Develop a deep knowledge of the institute and its processes and convert information into easily understood reports for finance and non-finance audiences.
    • Build capacity within the department on all aspects of this job to ensure continuity.
    • Other projects as assigned.

    Academic and professional qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting or related field
    • Full accounting qualifications - CPA (K) or ACCA.
    • 6 years progressive practice in accounting with experience in financial analysis reporting, financial modelling and creating presentations (Excel, PowerPoint)
    • 3 years’ experience in data analytics implementing business intelligence systems and reporting automation on platforms -Agresso ABW, Power BI, tableau.
    • Experience working with databases e.g., MySQL, SQL Server to transform financial reports is an advantage.
    • Business partnering skills including the ability to work well with various stakeholders.
    • Excellent oral, written, analytical, and presentation skills.
    • Critical thinking and business analysis skills
    • Ability to work independently, managing projects from inception to completion.
    • Advanced knowledge of computerized accounting software and programming required.
